Corrosion Performance and Protection of Ductile Iron in Seawater Environments

Ductile iron exhibits good corrosion resistance, making it a suitable material for use in seawater environments.

1.Characteristics of ductile iron
Ductile iron is a metallic material with moderate strength and hardness, offering an excellent combination of mechanical properties. Its strength is largely derived from its unique microstructure containing spheroidal graphite nodules. These nodules act to absorb energy under stress, thereby inhibiting crack propagation and enhancing toughness.

2.Corrosion resistance of ductile iron
The corrosion resistance of ductile iron is attributed to the formation of a dense, adherent oxide layer on its surface. This protective film acts as a barrier against corrosive agents. Moreover, ductile iron maintains good corrosion performance even under elevated temperature conditions.

3.Application of ductile iron in seawater environments
Ductile iron is widely employed in seawater applications, including systems for saline water treatment, offshore engine rooms, and marine equipment. Its reliable corrosion resistance ensures long-term performance in aggressive seawater environments. Nevertheless, regular maintenance and protective measures are recommended to further extend its service life.
